Quake III Arena
Quake III Arena is still one of the cleanest old-school multiplayer shooters: instant movement, readable weapons, pure duel energy, and maps built entirely around speed and control.
The usual modern route is to run the original data files through community source ports and competitive mods, with projects like ioquake3 and Quake3e keeping the classic game playable on modern systems.
For server browsing, the most useful current community directory route is
directory.ioquake3.org, with master.ioquake3.org still kept as a backwards-compatible address for older ioquake3 setups.
